I like to think Buckthorn as a genie disguised as a tree! Buckthorn is a helpful herb for someone wanting to make a wish (or few!). This idea goes back to the time when Buckthorn was one of the herbs associated with the little people. When fairies or elves were summoned by the person with a pure heart and spirit so they could be granted a wish.

It is said to get their attention an incense of Buckthorn, Elfwort and Wormwood was to be burned during a “between” time. If the person was pure in spirit the little people would appear and grant a wish. Being associated with the Fay, being able to summon them, it isn’t surprising that when used in a different way Buckthorn can repel their enchantment.
